Sustainable Building

"Examine each question in terms of what is ethically and aesthetically right, as well as what is economically expedient. A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise." - Aldo Leopold

Sustainable building seeks to reintroduce environmentally responsible construction processes that promote a healthier and greener Mother Earth. This is achieved by utilizing resource-efficient building materials that are locally available, minimally processed, durable, plentiful and/or recyclable.

Sustainable structures are designed in accordance with the local climate; sited with respect to the land; orientated to encourage passive cooling and heating strategies; and constructed with lower-embodied energy, reduced operational costs, and minimal waste, pollution and environmental degradation.

Building sustainably also encourages the utilization of clean, renewable energy; water conservation efforts; self-contained waste systems; recycling and composting; reforestation; and, sensitivity to watershed areas.
