Composting Bathroom in Cebadilla
In collaboration with the non-profit organizations Comunidad Connect and the San Juan del Sur Sister City Project, the retreat center Parque Maderas, and the community of Cebadilla, Casa de Tierra led a group of youth volunteers from the Carpe Diem Education Program to create a dry-composting bathroom for the children who attend the Professor David Gullette schoolhouse. We employed the chorizo technique, weaving mixes of sand, clay and straw around nicaraguan bamboo poles and wooden posts, to create the walls, installed recycled glass bottles to serve as windows, and applied milk-based paints in Nicaragua's national colors of blue and white.
